Andrew MacDonald – Deputy Leader of Sovereignty and Candidate for the Highlands and Islands Regional List in the 2026 Scottish Parliament Elections
Andrew MacDonald serves as Deputy Leader of Sovereignty. He is a native Highlander, born in Inverness, where he has always maintained a base.
He has supported sovereign independence for Scotland since the age of seven. He recognised early on that Scotland’s representation in Westminster rendered the nation subordinate.
Andrew previously held office within the Scottish National Party at branch, constituency, and national levels. He left the party in 1988 due to its shift toward advocating “independence” within the European Union, which he viewed as devolution rather than true sovereignty.
He believes that achieving independence requires radical action by the Scottish people themselves. This means pursuing a Unilateral Declaration of Independence supported by a democratic majority, rather than seeking permission from Westminster—a path successfully taken by other nations.
Following the decision by Fergus Ewing MSP to stand as an independent nationalist in the Inverness and Nairn constituency, Andrew withdrew his candidacy for that seat to support Ewing’s campaign. He now stands for Sovereignty on the Highlands and Islands regional list in the 2026 Scottish Parliament elections, in alliance with Liberate Scotland.
A vote for Sovereignty represents unequivocal support for full Scottish independence from both the United Kingdom and the European Union.
