Celebrate International Women’s Day by Dropping Gender Recognition Reform

Shetland, Scotland – “Sunday was International Women’s Day. One way to celebrate this properly would be for the parties that voted the Gender Recognition Reform (GRR) bill into place—the SNP, the Lib Dems, Labour and the Greens—to remove it from the parliamentary record and life in Scotland,” said Brian Nugent, Alliance to Liberate Scotland Shetland candidate.

He continued, “Having read the SNP candidate’s piece for International Women’s Day about women in politics, there was nothing to disagree with in a well-argued piece, but I did wonder if she was aware how involved the SNP is in bringing women’s rights down, and putting them in danger?”

“After two consultations, with the majority of the public against each time, the SNP—with a few notable exceptions—the Lib Dems, Labour and the Greens pushed a flawed bill through the Scottish Parliament.”

“Having been abandoned by the SNP, the Lib Dems, Labour and the Greens, women found a champion in the For Women Scotland (FWS) organisation.”[1]

“A flawed bill as many suggested because women’s rights were trampled on. The UK government were obliged to put a stop on the bill because it cut across the Equality Act 2010. GRR, in theory, was therefore stalled, although the Scottish government has continued to promote it throughout Scottish governmental and civil life.”

“Women and girls’ safe, private spaces are under threat from GRR. Women, surely, have the right to refuse consent to males in single-sex spaces or against males delivering intimate services to females.”

“FWS took the Scottish government to court to get a ruling on what sex meant in law. The Supreme Court decided that sex was biological, meaning that a Gender Recognition Certificate (GRC) does not change a person’s sex under the Equality Act 2010. Female women had rights over men with a GRC saying they were a woman.”

“The Scottish government had to pay FWS’s legal fees. FWS said this money would be used to fund any future legal action it deems necessary to ensure the Scottish Government complies with the law.”

“FWS took the Scottish government to court and the Supreme Court came out in their favour. But the Scottish government was being so ponderous in applying the ruling that nothing was being changed, so FWS felt they had to go to court again to get the Supreme Court ruling implemented, rather than the SNP government ignoring the ruling.”

“FWS are in court yet again in another case against the Scottish government on prison guidance, to ensure that only women go to women’s prisons.”

“It is remarkable that FWS has to go to court, so often, to ask the SNP government to comply with the law!”
